What is ADHD & how should ADHD be diagnosed?
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how the brain manages time, emotions, and daily tasks. Common ADHD symptoms include trouble focusing, organizing, task initiation and follow through, and feelings of overwhelm.
For accurate diagnosis, ADHD should be tested by an experienced clinician with advanced ADHD knowledge, through a comprehensive, evidence-based evaluation, not a single test or brief questionnaire. A proper assessment includes a detailed medical, developmental, and psychosocial history; standardized ADHD rating scales; review of symptoms across multiple settings; and confirmation of functional impairment. Brief cognitive testing can also be helpful to identify learning differences and guide targeted interventions, but should not be used solely for the diagnosis of ADHD.
